Here in the UK, 7 million people are registered for online dating with 1 in 3 relationships now beginning online. Let’s just let that sink in for a moment. 33% of new relationships in the UK now start online! Large online dating companies such as Match, OKcupid and Eharmony have almost become household names. They have millions of members and more and more people are signing up every day. Why is this?

It's no secret that people have become much more dependent on technology. Meeting a partner online is not only incredibly easy, it's a quick and practical way to filter through the “no’s” and “may-be’s” and get straight to the “yes please” section!

Finding someone who shares your interests and passions online has never been easier, and there are a few different ways to do it!

Until very recently online dating has been split into two categories. The casual hookup companies like Tinder, which have become incredibly popular with the younger generations, and the slower more traditional form of online dating, more popular with the older generations.

Now there seems to be a third form of online dating emerging created in part by the forced coronavirus lockdown. Mainstream dating apps have been heavily promoting virtual video dating as an alternative while people cannot meet face to face. It will be interesting to see how popular this means of meeting people will be when the lockdown has lifted.

It’s not hard to imagine that casual hook ups after a global pandemic might not be at the forefront of people’s mind. We will still be encouraged to maintain social distancing for quite some time so socialising, dates, one night stands and casual hook ups could be reduced for quite a while. On the flip side, people have a lot more time on their hands at the moment sitting at home and browsing for love, building friendships and flirting with potential matches. We anticipate that online dating usership and sign ups will remain constant and might even increase but for the time being users must be aware this will be more for “window shopping” for want of a better expression.

Whatever service is for you you’ll be sure to find plenty of options. What we can say with certainty is that online dating is here to stay in many different forms. If we were to give one piece of advice, make sure you know what you are searching for and use a service that is right for you.

There are lots of dating services that understand that people demand immediate results from their dating provider.

This has meant that we have seen the emergence of very niche and interest-specific services that match people based on familiarity. One area that has really taken off recently has been the eco-conscious, green and vegan community. It makes sense that if you're a vegan and have a strong passion for climate change and environmentalism, you will want to meet like-minded people through your dating service.

A great website in this space is EcoDate, a relatively new service here in the UK helping match eco-conscious singles. We certainly feel that this pandemic nightmare might just wake everyone up to what we are doing to the planet and if you can match love with helping the planet we only see that as a good thing!
