Pretty Pink Jewellery
Ilana & Amalia from Pretty Pink Jewellery are based in Scotland, where they handcraft their jewellery. All of their seeds are sourced sustainably from the rainforests in South America.
By encouraging the rural communities to harvest Tagua seeds, known as vegetable ivory, they help create jobs for whole families. They also use a unique natural harvesting method which doesn't harm the plants or any animals in the process.
We caught up with Ilana this week, to learn more about her journey.
1. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A fashion designer or an air hostess.
2. What inspired you to start the business?
What inspired me was the desire to create modern jewellery using sustainable and interesting materials from the Amazon rainforest. I was determined to showcase the natural beauty of the raw materials from the region, highlighting the importance of respecting ecological resources and the people involved in the process.
3. What do you sell and how is it made sustainably?
We sell jewellery made from a material known as 'vegetable ivory’, or ‘Tagua’. We work with natural materials, so the harvesting time has to be respected. Tagua is an Ivory substitute, the seeds are collected from the forest floor, and no plant or animals are killed in the process of harvesting. We also use açai seeds which are a bio product that would be wasted otherwise.
4. What’s your favourite thing about being a business owner?
The ability to create something new and to follow its creation process on a personal level, all the way from the beginning to the end and then to selling my product. That’s the best feeling!
5. What’s your productivity secret?
For me, it's to find something and thoroughly develop and practice it before starting something new.
6. How do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration mostly in things which are totally unrelated to the business. I find if I force inspiration it can lead to a complete mental block of creativity.
7. What’s your favourite quote?
“There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness “ - Mahatma Gandhi
8. What would you recommend to someone wanting to become an entrepreneur?
If you're waiting for the perfect time to start it may never come. Prepare to change your lifestyle as you and your business become one!
9. If you had all the money in the world, where would you live?
I'd stay where I am, I love Scotland for all that it is. I would love to bring other things such as my family closer to me though.
10. What is the dream with Pretty Pink Jewellery?
To create a brand that is associated with beautiful jewellery which respects the environment and gives back to nature and its people.
